Sustainable packaging? PET helps

PET is a sustainable material, and packaging made of PET contributes to the environmental sustainability of the end-product. But what is sustainability? Sustainability means among other things that a product's impact on the environment is as low as possible. Correct packaging can make a contribution. Think about it: good packaging ensures that products retain the right quality for longer. Not only at the consumer’s home, but also during the production, transport and sale of the product. Production of the contents often has a greater impact on the environment than production of the packaging. If we reduce production of the end-products by maintaining the contents at the right quality for longer, then we are contributing to sustainability.

Transport

There is even more to be gained. Lightweight packaging ensures lower environmental impact during product transport. This is where PET has a clear advantage over glass, for example. PET is virtually unbreakable. Losses during production and transport are low and replacement of damaged product is therefore limited. This is another advantage PET has over other packaging materials.

Recycling

PET can be completely recycled. Recycled PET is called PCR (Post Consumer Recycled). Using PCR ensures packaging that is even more sustainable. The production of PCR causes less harm to the environment than the production of new PET. Packaging can be made with up to 100% PCR. This material is virtually the same as new PET. However, it does have a light blue colour, and that can be a disadvantage for certain packaging.

Raw Materials

At the moment, PET is still produced from oil. More sustainable alternatives are actively being sought. It is now technically feasible to produce 30% of the PET raw materials by biological means. The aim is to increase this to 100%. All the advantages mentioned will remain, and therefore biologically produced PET is even more sustainable. We are not there yet, but we are monitoring this closely. In addition to standard PET, PET Power also offers its customers the option of using PCR for their packaging,. In this way we are offering a more sustainable option. As soon as biologically produced PET becomes available, we will test it and use it. PET is already a sustainable product, and with the use of PCR it becomes even more sustainable. And with the arrival of biologically produced PET, sustainability is completely guaranteed.

For many companies, the ultimate in packaging remains their own customer-specific bottle or jar. To be able to be part of the development process and achieve precisely the design that you had in mind for your new product. Sometimes there is nothing better. Along with the reassurance that none of your competitors can use this shape. Ever, if it's up to you. But the costs make it appear as though this is reserved for the lucky few. Those using millions of bottles a year who can afford it. At PET Power we now have an option available to all the other customers. Those who have to get by with (considerably) fewer bottles a year. The solution? We make use of a much smaller machine platform at one of our Asian partners.

Glass has long been the material of choice for pharmaceutical applications. However, the advent of PET (polyethyleneterephthalate) has not gone unnoticed. The reason is that PET is able to match the specifications laid down, with a few very clear advantages as well. A bottle made of PET weighs just 1/10 of its glass equivalent. This weight saving is extremely beneficial, particularly with pharmaceutical packaging, owing to the long distances over which these products are transported. The reduction in weight results in considerable savings in logistics costs.

Wine is still usually bottled in glass, owing to the effect of oxygen on the taste. Standard PET has an oxygen barrier of three months. This is often increased by adding anti-oxidants to the wine. PET Power is able to increase the shelf-life of wine up to 18 months, by adding an oxygen-blocking agent to the PET grains.

    Catering for the aviation sector

PET bottles have major advantages for catering aboard airplanes. On an intercontinental flight this can provide weight savings equivalent to two passengers. It is obvious that this offers considerable cost savings for air travel, quite apart from the positive impact on the environment. Apart from the currently existing 89 mm and 110 mm Tamper Evident caps, PET Power has, together with cap specialists, now developed an 82 mm Guarantee Cap. The advantage of this complete solution is that a cap with a pressure-sensitive liner is no longer necessary. Jar and lid can now be sealed in a single production line process. The sealed jar cannot be opened without visibly breaking the guarantee closing ring. This ensures a safe product for the end-consumer.

PET Power offers this standard solution as a package.
